Welcome note from Professor Predrag Sikiric MD, PhD, Chairman of 13th ICUR/ICGR meeting in Split, Croatia
Dear Colleagues,
Presentation of cutting-edge research has become one of the highlights of gastrointestinal research, offering opportunities for researchers to interact with colleagues and share their endeavors with the healthcare community.
We cordially invite you to participate in forthcoming 2009 meeting ICGR/ICUR (ICGR (International Conference on Gastrointestinal Research) /ICUR (International Conference on Ulcer Research)). This long standing international conference follows the wide presentation of the most relevant topics in gastroenterology, and related research.
The last 12th ICUR held in Osaka in 2006 was organized by Professor Arakawa, Osaka City University. The 11th ICUR was held in Croatia, in Dubrovnik in 2003, and was organized by Professor Sikiric, Zagreb University. The 10th ICUR organized by Professor Mozsik, Pecs University, was held in Hungary, in Budapest in 2000. Large amount of audience, beyond 600 doctors, gathered in the meeting and exchanged the heated discussion on gastrointestinal ulcers, namely esophageal, gastric, duodenal and intestinal as well as colonic ulcers.
In the Osaka meeting, the name of the conference has been changed into International Conference of Gastrointestinal Research from International Conference of Ulcer Research.
The "Gastrointestinal Research" – is a special emphasize to underline the full clinical significance of this international meeting for the whole gastrointestinal tract and all therapy aspects. All of the ICGR/ICUR meetings had special presentations in distinguished journals, such as Journal of Physiology (Paris), Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Digestion.
The Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (ICI factor 4.46) is the official journal of the "13th ICGR/ICUR Meeting".
Why should you attend the 13th ICGR/ICUR meeting?
Professor Sikiric, Chairman of the 13th ICGR/ICUR meeting, will be organizing a meeting to be held from 10 September - 16 September 2009 at Hotel Lav Le Meridien in Split, Croatia. The hotel is one of the most known hotels in Croatia, located in Split area named Podstrana with beautiful beach and ideal position.
To emphasize, the first part of September in Split is the most beautiful time of the year and thereby more than suitable for some kind of vacation during the meeting. Consequently, we are planning to organize special tours during the meeting to visit the nearby islands, country areas, etc. Besides the highest scientific achievements, the other essential part of the meeting would be enjoyable social events.
We strongly expect to have a large audience, and our intention is to have plenty of time to give many opportunities to present overviews and novel findings in such a high meeting.
The organization of special satellite symposiums during the meeting is highly encouraged.
In this, we are more than happy to transmit best welcome remarks of the experts:
I would encourage you to place this meeting on your calendar because, first of all, it will have an exceptional scientific/clinical program. Secondly, it will be in a magnificent hotel in a wonderful part of the world on the Dalmatian Coast of the Adriatic.

Welcome note from Koji Takeuchi, PhD. The Secretary General, ICGR
Dear colleagues
On behalf of the Standing Committee of International Conference on Gastrointestinal Research (ICGR), I am pleased to invite you to participate in the 13th ICGR / ICUR meeting organized by Professor Predrag Sikiric, which will be held in Split, Croatia on September 10-16, 2009.
The conference formally known as "International Conference on Ulcer Research (ICUR)" has been held every three years, and we had the 12th ICUR in 2006, organized by Professor Arakawa with a great success in Osaka. The reason for this change of nomenclature is to have much more possibilities to cover the wide scale of gastrointestinal researches.
A primary objective of ICGR is to enable participants to learn about the current status of the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal disorders, the diagnosis as well as the therapy, and also to provide a vehicle for scientists with common interests to discuss current issues in an informal setting. Another objective is to give an educational forum for digestive disease clinicians and researchers. I hope we see this conference as an important stepping-stone to expanding knowledge in gastrointestinal disorders and their clinical practice.
I would really like you to take the advantage of the opportunity presented by the 13th ICGR / ICUR meeting to present new scientific results and take away new ideas, knowledge and relationships with counterparts working in this field. I hope the forthcoming meeting in Split meets your expectations
Sincerely,
Koji Takeuchi, PhD.

Welcome note from Tetsuo Arakawa, MD, DMSc, FACG, AGAF Chairman of 12th ICUR
First of all, I would like to thank you for your contribution to the success of the 12th ICUR, which I organized in Osaka, Japan in 2006. A lot of people gathered in my home town from all over the world and enjoyed a scientific program and oriental food/scenery in spite of unpleasant humid, hot summer.
ICUR was started about 40 years ago to be focused on "experimental ulcer research", and a lot of great investigators had been grown through this meeting. Target of this meeting has been recently extended to whole GI tract and clinical topics has been included.
The 13th ICUR-ICGR will be held in Croatia, a beautiful country where we had 11th ICUR in Dubrovnik in 2003. I enjoyed not only high quality of scientific program but also delicious sea food with excellent red wine and beautiful places such as "Old Town". After six years, we will go back to this beautiful country, this time in Split area named Podstrana. I am asked to have one session in this forthcoming meeting by Prof. Sikiric, chairman of the meeting. I am now thinking about a fascinating topic for the session to contribute to the success of the forthcoming the 13th ICUR-ICGR.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Croatia and enjoying both of science and art there together again in 2009!

Welcome note from Akinori Yanaka, M.D. & Ph.D.
Dear colleagues
Recent advance in gastrointestinal research, such as discovery of Helicobacter pylori (Hp), brought us great impact on ulcer research.
Although the mechanisms by which Hp causes peptic ulcer diseases (PUD) has been still unclear, it is now evident that eradication of Hp alone not only prevents peptic ulcer diseases, but also reduces risk of gastric cancer. In contrast, we still cannot solve the problem on NSAIDs-induced GI diseases. In addition, various GI diseases other than PUD are gradually increasing. It is very exciting news for ulcer
researchers that international conference on ulcer research (ICUR) has now changed its name from ICUR to international conference on gastrointestinal research (ICGR), which means that this meeting covers not only PUD, but also a variety of other GI diseases, such as GI cancers, IBD, and functional GI disorders.
The 13th ICGR is going to be held in Split, a beautiful historical city in Croatia, on September, 2009 under organization by Professor Sikiric. We welcome many abstracts not only on ulcer research, but also on other GI diseases from all the scientists and clinicians in the world.
Sincerely,
